EXPERIENCE


1983 to Present UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
Youth Development & Master Gardener Advisor, Santa Barbara County, California
An academic position with the University of California’s Cooperative Extension. Responsibilities include: direction, administration, and management of the Santa Barbara County 4-H Youth Development and Master Gardener Programs. Duties include the supervision and training of paid staff and over four hundred adult volunteers, reaching over 5000 youth participants. Responsibilities also include applied research and creative activities, curriculum design, evaluation, program and organizational development, teaching and extension work, grants development and management, University and public service, professional development and affirmative action. Specialization in non-formal science and environmental education with under served communities, community education and development. Currently serving as Director of the Agua Pura Watershed Education Project and the Neighborhood GreenNet Horticultural and Computer Education Program, two USDA funded grants addressing the Latino community.

Spring 2005 LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR YOUTH, ACDI/VOCA
Consultant and Leadership Trainer, Kragujevac, Serbia
Provided training in leadership skills for selected youth (ages 16-18), representatives of non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), and local government young leaders. Training focused on transferring contemporary knowledge about leadership issues.

Summer 2003 PROYECTO DE EDUCACION TECNICA AGROPECUARIA - PETA
Consultant, Strategic Planner and Educational Methods Trainer, Tarija, Bolivia
Assessed training needs of PETA staff at four distinct sites, developed and delivered training modules on practical and theoretical educational methods, including experiential learning practices, lesson planning tools that integrate environmental education and life skills into educational programs. Led a participatory assessment and strategic planning process for the four PETA sites and for the overall program. Prepared an extensive plan and report with detailed recommendations with input from PETA staff and collaborators.

Fall 2OOO SAVE THE CHILDREN, BOLIVIA (SCB)
Consultant, Planner ACDI/VOCA, La Paz & Oruro, Bolivia
Lead a review of SCB youth development programs in Oruro, Bolivia. Designed and delivered participatory staff training and program planning modules on topics that included: curriculum development, planning and design, The Life-Skills Model, Assets Development
and environmental education. Prepared an extensive program plan in Spanish in collaboration with SCB staff.

Fall 1999 FUNDACION CHUCHINI WILDLIFE REFUGE AND ECOTOURISM CENTER
Consultant Planner, ACDI/VOCA, Chuchini, Trinidad, Bolivia
Designed and lead a participatory review of the Chuchini Foundation, an Amazonian wildlife reserve, ecotourism center and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation station.
Reviewed foundation and ecotourism activities and developed recommendations for
re-organization. Lead a participatory planning process with foundation staff and stakeholders. Developed recommendations for improvements to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation program; Prepared a report and a three-year planning document that has been adopted by the foundation.

1996 INTERNATIONAL TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT (ITD)
Consultant Trainer, Amherst, Massachusetts
Designed and delivered a training module on low-cost, low-tech audio-visual
aids for environmental education programs in El Salvador, Central America.
The training was participatory and hands-on. The participants were twenty-six
Salvadoran environmental educators, and included people from rural indigenous
villages to ministry officials.

1982-1983 CALIFORNIA HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (CHDC)
Director of Special Farm Worker Projects, Windsor, California
Primarily responsible for the direction and management of staff (9-13 persons) and
activities under the Special Farm Workers Project branch of CHDC. Planned, developed
and coordinated programs to serve farmworkers through self-help, advocacy, and
direct assistance, utilizing a budget of nearly a quarter of a million dollars.

1981-1982 FARALLONES INSTITUTE/CHP INTERNATIONAL
Senior Trainer/Training Designer, Occidental, CA
In charge of and responsible for revisions of programs and curricula for training of
Peace Corps volunteers in appropriate technology.

1980-1981 LESOTHO DISTANCE TRAINING CENTER (LDTC)
USAID Consultant: Service Agency Project Advisor, Maseru, Lesotho
Responsible for the development of a service agency within the LDTC that could
offer high quality technical assistance in non-formal education (NFE) to other
NFE organizations in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

1978-1980 CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION, Amherst, Massachusetts
Conceived, designed and developed an educational materials resource center.
Worked as an educational materials developer and audio/visual specialist for non-
formal education projects for Indonesia, Swaziland and Latin America.

1978-1980 ACTION PEACE CORPS/VISTA
Peace Corps Recruiter, Boston, Massachusetts
Independently responsible for a wide range of volunteer recruitment activities,
utilizing administrative, organizational, technical and interpersonal skills.

1975-1977 UNITED STATES PEACE CORPS, Washington, D.C.
Assigned to various positions and locations as follows:

Associate Researcher, Illustrator & Visual Aids Technician Designed, developed, and produced audio/visual aids for nutrition education
Developed testing methods for evaluation of visual educational materials

Functioned as liaison between government agencies, CARE, Peace Corps, and
INCAP. Following Hurricane “Fifi” in 1975, was temporarily assigned as Zone
Coordinator for Reconstruction, CARE, Honduras.

Cooperative Promoter and Agricultural Extentionist
Advised cooperative member farmers, who were mainly highland Maya Indians, on
agricultural techniques, cooperative function, and their responsibilities.
